Before I begin, let me recommend two books I read many years ago on the subject of subliminal messages in advertising: "Media Sexploitation" and "Subliminal Seduction" written by Wilson Bryan Key who was, when he wrote them, Professor Emeritus at the University of California, Berkeley. Subliminal content in advertising, news, magazines, movies and other media can be simply "dirty words" lightly witten into the page of a printed photo or into the frames of a video. It's actually a form of hypnosis that reaches directly into our unconscious without the need for hypnotic induction. The word "SEX" is often writen repeatedly all over the page or frame in a way that we don't notice it consciously, but our subconscious mind sees it clearly. Advertisers overlay what they call a "mosaic" of the word sex to grab our subconscious and plant the advertising deep into our minds. Sex is a "trigger word" that, when applied subliminally, profoundly effects what we buy, what we believe or even who we vote for. Below is a frame taken from a TV advertisement: ![]() The three small photos below were taken from the Pier1 video still. I enlarged them to make the trigger words (sex) slightly easier to see. |

Paradoxically, the harder the trigger words are to see, the stronger their effect. Years ago a rum manufacturer wanted to push their Medium rum, so in a magazine advertisement showing a bottle of Light, Medium and Dark rum, they wrote, "U buy" backwards and upside-down right next to the bottle of Medium rum. Sales of the Medium rum skyrocketed. Place an advertisement or a news photo from a magazine or newspaper on a table in front of you. Better yet, print out the photo from the Pier1 TV commercial on this page and look for the three triggers I cut out and enlarged. You'll find many more, I guarantee. Gaze at it and relax. "X" is the easiest letter to spot, followed by "S" "E" and especially "e" are harder to see, plus, letters are often written backwards and/or upside-down. If you see other strange things like skulls, mice, penises, vaginas, lizards or other strange images or words, you're PROBABLY not imagining things. True, you can see images in clouds or in the bark of a tree, but images that appear in advertising are almost never coincidental. Subliminal embeds in advertising have been used for over a century. It is a "secret" and highly developed science. Short article I wrote years ago Advertising and news videos and images employ [subliminal] depictions of sexual taboos, unresolved Oedipal conflicts and other fears; the whole gamut of the human experience is hidden and used to cruelly manipulate us into buying crap we don't need, to believe absolute nonsense babbled at us on the TV news and to vote for smiling liar number one or smiling liar number 2. Advertisers and TV news shows also embed images, words and even videos in near infrared and near ultraviolet that is totally invisible to our conscious eyes but are seen very clearly by our unconscious minds. I will cover some of these other methods of subliminal penetration soon. |
